The four Queens, Qudsia Begum (1819-37), Sikander Begum (1844-68), Shah Jahan Begum (1868-1901), and Sultan Jahan Begum (1901-1926) were great reformists and patrons of education, art, culture and public works. They also built several great monuments, which still stand as testimonies to the city’s celebrated past.

Finding Shiva Within You

Madurai
The capital city of the Pandyas – India’s oldest continuous ruling dynasty – Madurai, is rich in history and culture. It is surrounded by large stone hills in the shape of an elephant, a snake and a cow. Many of these
have ancient Digambar Jain cave shrines as well.

Madurai’s main temple is for Siva as Chokkanatha (meaning mesmerising beauty) but it is his wife, Meenakshi (which means eyes like a fish) who rules the city. Her temple is large and filled with incredible art and sculpture and is the venue for many dazzling festivals.

Alwarthirunagari
This small village in the Tuticorin district of Tamil Nadu has been in continuously inhabited from at least the 4th Century BCE. The town revolves around the temple of the Nammalvar – a poet saint devotee of Vishnu. Around Alwar Tirunagari, there are nine Vishnu temples, each dedicated to a Navagraha. Alwar Tirunagari itself is dedicated to Guru (Jupiter). While we will visit this temple, we will also use this town as our base to explore some dazzling temples dedicated to Shiva in the vicinity.
