Overview of
Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka, formerly known as Ceylon and officially the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, is an island country in South Asia. It lies in the Indian Ocean, southwest of the Bay of Bengal, separated from the Indian peninsula by the Gulf of Mannar and the Palk Strait.
`Swarnadweep’- the golden isle – is what they called Sri Lanka once upon a time. Swarnadweep, incidentally, was the word the Brits later bashed and distorted into the barely-recognisable `Serendib’, and that in turn gave rise to `serendipity’- the `faculty or phenomenon of finding valuable or agreeable things not sought for’! It has also been called the `Pearl of the Orient’,
Sri Lanka isn’t only about its beaches and relaxed pace. There’s a lot more to it. Food so spicy it’ll blow the top of your head off, but leave you clamouring for more. Silver domed churches and gold-plated temples. Elephant orphanages and fragrant spice gardens. And plenty, plenty more.
Sri Lanka can be ideally combined with experiences to India, Maldives and other parts of South East Asia.
